Welcome!

Academic Background

My name is Vaughn Miller, and I am a licensed clinical psychologist in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia. I specialize in providing psychotherapy services for teenagers, adults, and couples. I completed a Doctor of Psychology degree (Psy.D.) with Regent University's APA-accredited program in August of 2020, followed by postdoctoral training with American University's Counseling and Psychological Services in 2021.

Clinical Approach

As a clinical psychologist, I use culturally informed techniques, primarily emphasizing the approaches of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). My clinical interests include trauma-informed care, cross-cultural counseling, couples counseling, identity development, grief and loss work, mindfulness, in addition to the treatment of anxiety and depression.

Personal Background

I have ten years of experience as a K-12 teacher in both the United States and the Kingdom of Bahrain, having earned an M.S. in Adaptive Special Education in 2011. In my free time, I enjoy playing Indie games on Steam, traveling with family, and singing (as a tenor) in my local church choir.

Integrated Clinical Approaches

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)

IPT is a time-limited, focused, evidence-based approach to treat mood disorders. The main goal of IPT is to improve the quality of a client’s interpersonal relationships and social functioning to help reduce their distress.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy CBT

As an evidence-based therapy in mental health that has been shown to be effective in over 1000 research studies, CBT can be used for a range of cognitive and emotional problems, from depression to anxiety to addiction.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

MBCT is a modified form of cognitive therapy that incorporates mindfulness practices such as meditation and breathing exercises. Using these tools, MBCT therapists teach clients how to break away from negative thought patterns that can cause a downward spiral

Positive Psychology

Positive psychology is a science of positive aspects of human life, such as happiness, well-being, and flourishing. To quote its founder Martin Seligman, it's the "scientific study of optimal human functioning with an aim to discover and promote factors that allow individuals and communities to thrive."
